Scientific activity is an integral part of the department staff work. The sphere of interest of employees in this direction is quite wide. The priority is to study clinical manifestations, brain stroke epidemiology, brain injury, and demyelinating diseases of the nervous system. The department staff activity is also focused on a headache problem. In addition to studying the prevalence and manifestations of various migraine forms, work is underway to find modern methods of diagnosis and treatment.
Since 2017, the department staff has been involved in the implementation of research topic 0122U000095 Neuropsychological, Psychopathological, Instrumental and Laboratory Diagnosis of Dementias of Various Etiologies
The scientific topics have been completed:
1. 2010 – Epidemiology and Risk Factors for Brain Stroke in Sumy.
2. 2011 – Modern Aspects of Clinical and Lycvorological Diagnostics in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry.
3. 2021 – Predictors of the Effectiveness of Preventive Treatment of Migraine Depending on the Clinical Course and Psycho-emotional Characteristics of Patients.
The department staff’s scientific work results are represented in more than 500 printed works, 10 monographs and manuals, numerous collections of materials of international and congresses, congresses, and conferences. More than 30 articles are printed in publications, the Scopus and the Web of Science are calculated. Students of the department’s scientific section repeatedly became participants in the second round of All-Ukrainian competitions of student scientific works and student scientific conferences of different levels. Teachers have certificates, which allow conducting international clinical research.
In 2018 and 2019, Oleksii Kmyta received grants for an internship in neurosurgery at leading European medical research institutions (University Hospital of Umeå, CHU Limoges). Dmytro Sotnikov was a participant in the significant international events in neurology – 19th Congress of the International Society of Headache (Dublin, 2019) and 60th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Neurology (Osaka, 2019).
In 2020, the Center for Diagnostics and Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis Patients was opened by Kmyta Oleksii at the Neurological Department of the SOR NCS “Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital.” This is a joint project of the Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital and the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology
Since 1995 the Department has a student scientific section, where students carry out independent research work, participate in scientific conferences at various levels, have publications in scientific publications.Scientific researches by D.Butenko, M. A. Levkovych, M. I. Diachenko, S. A. Korostilia are highly appreciated by the commissions of All-Ukrainian competitions of student scientific works.The most active graduates enter postgraduate studies and later engage in teaching. A significant number of graduates-circle members have become neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons and work in different regions of the country. For the period 2009-2016, 14 master’s theses were defended.

SCIENTIFIC WORK OF THE COURSE OF PSYCHIATRY, NARCOLOGY, MEDICAL PSYCHOLOGY. DIRECTIONS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
In 2016-2020 Associate Professor Mudrenko Irina conducted research on “Suicidal behavior in patients with dementia”, which is devoted to the study of suicidal behavior of patients with different clinical variants of dementia in Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, mixed dementia based on comprehensive clinical neuropsychological, neuropsychological examination of patients, assessment of psychogenic factors and environmental resources in order to develop prognostic, diagnostic criteria for suicidal behavior and a comprehensive differentiated program of medical and psychological rehabilitation and prevention of suicidal behavior in different types of dementia. According to scientific research published 33 printed works, of which 23 articles: 20 – in professional scientific publications, 3 – in international publications related to the scientometric database Scopus, 10 – abstracts in congresses, conferences, symposiums. Currently, postgraduate students of course psychiatry, narcology and medical psychology are conducting research in the field of “Mental Disorders in HIV Infection and COVID-19”. Scientific research is conducted using the methods of evidence-based medicine, in particular, cognitive evoked potentials, bioelectrical activity, neuroimaging changes in the brain due to infections are studied. The research is carried out on the clinical basis of the Sumy Regional Clinical Medical Center for Socially Dangerous Diseases, using the existing material and technical base of the institution (computer electron encephalography system Axon st, electroencephalographic software and hardware complex “Neurocom” with long-latent hearing, visual and cognitive evoked potentials, rheograph (REG, RVG) 4-channel computer with cardio channel “Regina 2000”, rheographic complex REOCOM professional rheograph, electrocardiograph HEART SCREEN 112 CLINIC, etc.). Students’ Scientific Group
There is a Students’ Scientific Group at the Department, established in 1995. The students conduct independent researches, take part in concluding conferences and publish articles in scientific periodicals. Scientific researches of L. Karpenko, Yu. Ivakhniuk, O.Novykova, Ye. Retiunska, Yu. Borsch, N. Zakharchenko, M. Iskrytska, O. Matlay, O. Ponora has got the appreciation of All-Ukrainian Contest Committees. M. Iskrytska’s research entitled “State of the vegetative nervous system in young people” has obtained recognition of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Committee (2007). Yu.Motorna got a certificate of class III at the All-Ukrainian Contest of Students Research Work (2008) for her research “Functional asymmetry in human body”.
A great deal of graduates – members of the Group – became neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons and work in different regions of our country.
