In 1995 on the basis of Neurology Department of Sumy Municipal Clinical Hospital, Neurosurgery Department of Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital, Sumy Regional Psychoneurologic Dispensary and Sumy Regional Dermatovenerologic Dispensary there was established a Unit of the Nervous System Diseases, Neurosurgery, Medical Psychology, Psychiatry and Narcology as a part of the Department of Internal Diseases Propaedeutics (the Head of the Department was Ivan Danylovych Rachynskyi, M.D., Professor), and later – as a part of the Department of Dermatovenerology (the Head of the Department was Vasyl Andriiovych Bocharov, M.D., Professor).
Faina Hryhorivna Kolenko (PhD in Medical Science, associate professor) was appointed to the Head of the Unit. The Neurosurgery Course was managed by Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Potapov, PhD in Medical Science, associate professor. Arkadii Volodymyrovych Kustov (associate professor, PhD in Medical Science) has been the Chief of Psychiatry Course since 1995.
In March 2005 there was formed the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology with Psychiatry, Narcology, Medical Psychology, Skin and Venereal Diseases, Occupational Diseases, Allergology and Clinical Immunology Courses. Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Potapov (M.D., Professor) was appointed to the Head of the Department.
In 1998, for the first time in Ukraine, it was started the All-Ukrainian Academic Competition in Skin and Venereal Diseases within the Dermatovenerology Course.
Faina Hryhorivna Kolenko – PhD in Medical Science, associate professor
For the working period, the members of the Department provided educational, research, pedagogic and treatment-and-consultation work; they carry out the process of interns, resident physicians and masters training and continuous medical education in Sumy region. Research activities are also actively conducted; the main directions of them are: the research of the main pathogenetic and clinical features of craniocerebral trauma, cerebrovascular diseases; the study of inflammatory-reparative processes in chronic dermatitis, psoriasis and the influence of occupational factors of technical process on health. 10 textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, 12 monographs, 55 study guides and more than 350 articles in leading scientific Ukrainian and foreign periodicals. F.G.Kolenko, associate professor, was awarded with a Certificate of Merit of the Ministry of Health in 2006 for considerable personal contribution to the development of health protection and for complete professionalism. Professor O.O.Potapov and associate professor F.G.Kolenko were awarded with Certificates of Merit of Public Health Department (2008) for considerable personal contribution to the residency training and for complete professionalism.
